A cantonment is literally a military camp. During the war of 1812 Andrew Jackson camped his troops in the area as he prepared to battle the British and Spanish who controlled Spanish Pensacola. The Battle of Pensacola in 1814 resulted in the British abandoning Pensacola and ultimately the Spanish surrendered to Jackson.

While the majority of people in Cantonment commute to Pensacola and other surrounding areas to work, International Paper and Ascend Solutions are both significant employers in the area. And while Navy Federal Credit Union is not technically in the 32533 zip code, its presence as a major employer and service provider has a substantial impact on Cantonment.

Cantonment is home to well sought after schools. Jim Allen Elementary, Pine Meadow Elementary, Ransom Middle School, and J.M. Tate High School offer a diverse array of both academic and extracurricular programs. Tate has a storied history in Baseball and Football and is home to The Showband of the South.
